FOR I AM DEAD

When it comes to historical dramas, I believe there is a tendency for filmmakers to oftentimes rely on gorgeous costumes and picturesque imagery to immerse the viewer into their world all the while lacking in actual substance. It is so refreshing to say this is not the case with For I Am Dead. Written and directed by Patricia Delso Lucas, the film tells the story of Oscar, a wealthy man who has lived an extravagant life, but a part of himself is missing. He's lonely. Having lived a life of great excesses, he is now ready to confess his love to his gardener Jude before an untimely death.

When the film opens, we are treated to a voice-over by Oscar that perfectly encapsulates the rest of his journey, but what makes it all the more intriguing (and off-putting) is that his inner thoughts do not at all yet match his actions. Without this look into his mind, he appears quite happy. Portrayed by Al Nazemian, Oscar really comes to life (and death). His performance is incredibly consistent and oftentimes moving. He's given all the help he needs by an equally great performance from Riggsby Lane portraying Jude, which I would argue is the more challenging role once the twist comes into focus.

Visually speaking this is a gorgeous production. Cinematographer Dominika Podczaska does an astounding job here, frequently reminding me of Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon. The use of jump cuts and subtle shifts in the sound design don't all work as intended, but I understand the purpose and it definitely aids to the off-putting character moments in which they're utilized. The score by Tom Bourgeois also fits the mood perfectly, adding yet another level to this inspired story.

Patricia Delso Lucas shows what a talented and capable filmmaker she is with this very interesting film that unfolds in a rather satisfying way. A period piece such as this can be difficult to get through for some, but even if this isn't your type of story, there's so much here to admire. Definitely worth a watch. Delso Lucas has proven her worth here as a filmmaker, and Iā€™m excited to see what she does next.
