Woonyea Han delivers a clinic on “how to make a short film” with her fantastic offering, FIX ME.

Drawing from her own personal challenges, a woman with a broken heart (played by Woonyea Han) tends to a sentimental gift as a metaphorical act of healing. While waiting for a cobbler to complete the repair, we are treated to a story about a young boy named Steven (with an excellent performance by Slate Holtsclaw) - who has also previously visited the shop - as he experiences a difficult time in his own life.

Their stories cross in a conclusion that is equal parts beautiful and heart warming.

FIX ME is a well produced and wonderfully crafted experience with an uplifting, fairytale quality that hits the mark. Which is why it won Best Narrative Short during IndieEye Film Awards’ February 2021 competition.

The best thing any director or producer can do is assemble a team of talented and experienced people to bring a story to life - and that’s what makes this charming indie film a bonafide gem.

Woonyea Han, with Co-Director Simon Chung and DP Tarun Hansen, are meticulous and thoughtful in their effort. The image quality is stunning. The framing is cinematic, yet practical. I particularly enjoyed the opening scene where the woman and the boyfriend stand in front of a brick wall, divided by two different colors of paint - artfully symbolic of their imminent separation.

That same level of care is evident throughout production as Niacin Fan, Noel Palacios and Cade Patten combine to build a perfectly placed, well mixed soundscape that is elegant, gentle and supports the narrative. Also due their proper respect are editors Arturo Zuniga and Shaun Wood along with VFX artist Guangtao Pi.

In the world of indie filmmaking, it’s a luxury to have a full team on board - but that’s what elevates a project. Putting the right people in the right places can make a world of difference.

Credit to Han for her tightly written story that is well balanced between showing and telling; an art form of its own.

Keep an eye out for Woonyea Han. If she has more stories to share, I’ll be in the front row.
